Task 4: IMPROVING THE OCEAN COMPONENT TO BETTER SIMULATE AND UNDERSTAND THE VARIABILITY OF THE SEA LEVEL AND OF THE THERMOHALINE CIRCULATION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Leaders: J. Beuvier (MERCATOR) and B. Meyssignac (LEGOS-CEFREM) / Partners: CNRMGAME, ENSTA, LEGOS CEFREM, MERCATOR

Objectives: The main goals are (1) to assess the existing reference products (in-situ, satellite, past reconstructions) used to evaluate the representation of the regional ocean model sea level, (2) to develop new reference products such as an ocean regional reanalysis and new datasets reconstructed from observations, (3) to include the various physical processes important for simulating the sea level variation in the models, (4) to evaluate the new ocean model configurations for multi-decadal hindcast simulations to improve the understanding of the past Mediterranean sea level variability at climate–scale (from monthly to multidecadal time scale). Task 4 is divided into 3 sub-tasks:

  • Task 4.1: High quality reference products for sea level,
  • Task 4.2: Modelling and understanding the long-term variability of the Mediterranean thermohaline circulation,
  • Task 4.3: Modelling and understanding the sea level climate variability.
