Dataset Title |
RALI-French airborne radar-lidar instrument for the study of cloud processes and evaluating satellite products in a global scale |
Dataset Purpose |
French airborne-lidar instrument developed to study cloud processes and to evaluate satellite products when satellite overpasses are available. Dataset obtained during the POLARCAT mission focusing on Arctic Polar clouds
|
Dataset Abstract |
RALI project consists of an airborne platform combining a 95 GHz Doppler cloud radar named RASTA and a triple-wavelength dual-polarization lidar (High spectral resolution capability) named LNG for the characterisation of the macrophysical, microphysical, radiative, and dynamical properties of clouds, aerosols, and convection. |
Acquisition Methodology |
By combining both instruments to simultaneous detect a valid signal over the same region, one can retrieve particle size and concentration
|
Quality |
During each field experiment a dedicated radar calibration flight is planned. It is the first flight processed in the automated processing chain of RASTA. Once the calibration figure is updated, the rest of the dataset is processed. The calibration of the radar is achieved using the so-called sigma-0 technique (e.g.,ÃÂ Li et al, 2005; Bouniol et al. 2008), which assumes that the ocean backscatter at around 10 degrees incidence should be around 7 dB. This calibration technique is expected to be accurate within about 1 dB.
