Dataset Title DARDAR: Ice cloud properties derived from CloudSat and CALIPSO measurements in a global scale
Dataset Purpose The objective of the DARDAR (raDAR/liDAR) project is to retrieve cloud properties by combining the CloudSat radar and the CALIPSO lidar measurements. The released products include a multi-sensor extractions collocated with the RADAR footprints, a CALIPSO/CLOUDSAT combined vertical categorization mask, and cloud variables retrieved from RADAR/LIDAR measurements.
Dataset Abstract There are two main products derived from DARDAR project: (1) DARDAR-CLOUD: Ice cloud properties derived from CloudSat and CALIPSO (CALIOP). There are other variables describing the mycrophysics of clouds available in ICARE. (2) DARDAR-MASK: The main variable of this product is a features categorization mask. The combination of both satellites provides accurate particle size with height.
Acquisition Methodology DARDAR-CLOUD: The algorithm used to retrieve ice cloud properties was developed at the University of Reading by Julien Delanoë and Robin Hogan, Delanoë. Ice cloud retrievals are available at CloudSat horizontal resolution (1.4km) and CALIPSO vertical resolution (60m). DARDAR-MASK: The joint radar-lidar mask results from the combination of the 2B-GEOPROF CloudSat radar mask and the L2 CALIPSO vertical feature mask. This merge mask includes some refinements based on the radar and lidar signal themselves and a specific phase discrimination technique.
