Dataset Purpose
Dataset Abstract Numerous sea surface salinity drifters have been deployed in the Arctic/subarctic region. Since 2008 there are discontinuous data available through the SMOS project of SSS and SST, among other variables.
Acquisition Methodology The buoys are deployed as part of cruisers like the OVIDE.

Use Constraints Validated drifter data are available under 'Regions' whereas data from ongoing drifters are under 'Active drifters' with restricted access.

Description Started in 2002, the OVIDE project contributes to the observation of the circulation elements in the subpolar gyre of the North Atlantic, to better understand climate variability of the North Atlantic Ocean and its interactions with the atmosphere in a warming climate. Some features are particularly monitored in this region because they are essential for their impact on the climate of Europe : the magnitude and the variability of the meridional overturning circulation are followed, as well as the mechanisms and sites of formation of subpolar mode waters.
