Dataset Title Land surface temperature maps derived from remote sensing observations over the Arctic
Dataset Purpose The use of remote sensing instruments as key players to map land surface temperature (LST) at large temporal and spatial scales. This dataset presents how to combine passive microwave and thermal infrared data to estimate LST during summer snow free periods over northern high latitudes.
Dataset Abstract Hourly/daily land surface temperature over circumpolar arctic were produced from the SSM/I  and SSMIS microwave radiometers , during snow-free periods and over 1996-2012. MODIS data were used to calibrate the retrieval algorithm. The spatial resolution is 25 km and the product is available over the circumpolar northern hemisphere, for latitudes larger than 45°N.
Acquisition Methodology The observations were interpolated at hourly time step using ERA-Interim reanalysis of skin temperature
Quality This product was locally evaluated at five experimental sites of the EU-PAGE21 project against air temperature measurements and meteorological model reanalysis, and compared to MODIS LST product at both local and circumpolar scale. The results giving a mean RMSE of the order of 2.5 K, demonstrate the usefulness of the microwave product, insensitive to clouds contaminating thermal infrared products and offering a better resolution compared to model reanalysis.

Description The PAGE21 consortium is be made up of leading European and international permafrost specialists, covering the entire spectrum of research from field studies, process studies, and remote sensing to global climate modeling. The consortium consists of 18 international partners from the following countries: Austria, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, Island, Netherlands, Norway, Russian Federation and Sweden. PAGE21 will form the basis for accurate representation of permafrost-related processes in global climate projections, the lack of which has, until now, hampered assessments of the feedbacks of Arctic carbon pools to global climate change.
