Dataset Title ASTAR 2004 and 2007 campaigns: Aerosol and cloud properties aircraft measurements in the polar troposphere of Longyearbean (Svalbard)
Dataset Purpose The aim of the ASTAR (Arctic Study of Tropospheric Aerosols, Clouds and Radiation) campaigns was to investigate aerosol properties in the transition period from Arctic haze to background conditions. Thereby, the main objectives of the campaign were the determination of the vertical structure of the chemical, physical and optical properties of aerosol particles (referring to direct climate effect) as well as the investigation of cloud microphysical properties in the Arctic as a function of different tropospheric aerosol load and the regional extent of aerosol and cloud structures (referring to indirect climate effect).
Dataset Abstract ASTAR campaigns are part of CLIMPSLIP+IPEV (CLimate IMpacts of Short-Lived pollutants In the Polar region Institut Polaire français Paul Emile Victor) project, carried out during the Arctic spring over the Svalbard archipelago. During those campaigns aerosol and cloud properties in the polar troposphere were measured using a research aircraft. The measurements in 2007 are also devoted to the validation of satellite sensors, in particular of the CloudSat/Calipso radar/lidar system onboard the A-Train.
Acquisition Methodology The ASTAR 2004 (10 April to 18 June) campaign involved two aircrafts, the Polar 2 and the Polar 4. The Polar 2 carried the cloud physics instrumentation as well as an aerosol lidar while the Polar 4 payload was focused on aerosol in situ measurements. The Polar 2 and Polar 4 are research aircraft of the Dornier 228-101 and 228-200 type, respectively, owned by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven and operated by the DLR flight facility department. Both are two-engine turboprop aircraft well capable of operating under the harsh conditions of the polar environment. The aircraft fly at acruising speed of around 80 m s−1. During ASTAR 2007 campaign (26 March to 17 April a Polar-2 aircraft carried on cloud in situ and remote sensing measurements and Falcon-20 carried out aerosols and gas measurements.
