Dataset Title |
RACEPAC field campaigns: Radiation-Aerosol-Cloud aircraft measuerements in Inuvik (Canada) |
|
Dataset Purpose |
The purpose of this campaign is to obtain measurements with both cloud and clear sky missions with the majority of flights dedicated to clouds while back ground conditions such as surface albedo and aerosol profiles, will be characterized during the clear sky missions.

Dataset Abstract |
The RACEPAC-LaMP (Le Laboratoire de Météorologie Physique) project investigates the spatial distribution of ice and liquid water in mixed phase boundary layer clouds and its impact on remote sensing. The experimental design of the RACEPAC (Radiation-Aerosol-Cloud ExPeriment in the Arctic Circle) field campaign planned in collaboration with the AWI ( lfred-Wegener-Institut) and other German research groups (LIM, KIT, MPIC,FZJ) for spring 2014 (April-May) will be a major improvement over prior campaigns (ASTAR, POLARCAT, SORPIC, VERDI…). Both AWI polar research aircrafts (Polar-5 and Polar-6) flying at the same speed will be involved. |
|
Acquisition Methodology |
The Polar-5 aircraft will be equipped with state of the art remote sensing instrumentations, whereas the Polar-6 will be mounted with improved in situ probes, allowing simultaneous measurements above (remote sensing) and inside (in situ) the cloud. These closure conditions will be maintained over extended flight periods and will provide us with an unprecedented data set to study the interaction between the cloud microphysical, optical and radiative properties.
